| The Indian Community in the Lao PDR is very small, comprising about 120 in total. Out of these, more than 90% live in the capital city of Vientiane, and most have small businesses. About 75% are Muslims hailing from around Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Many have settled and intermarried with Laos. They also continue to have warm and close links with India, regularly attending various functions in the Embassy. About 10 expatriate Indians are with UN-related Organisations, international NGOs or multinational companies and a few of them have private businesses. There are two Indian garment factories, four Indian restaurants and a few jewellery shops owned by Indians in Vientiane. Some of the Indians have shops in Talat Sao (Morning Market), Koudinh Market and also in the Talat Thongkhankham. There is a Mosque in Vientiane. The Imam of the Masjid, Haji Kamaruddin hails from Tamilnadu. |
